Kayak rudder vs. Skeg

13 03 2007

So I’m hearing racers at the Swamp Fox use both terms to describe the steering device off the back of some of the kayaks…one thing I do know is whatever they are called they work well. Working meaning they help keep the boat tracked, never gave this much thought as to why but this article details how either option works in aiding your paddling. When hearing both terms used think of a skeg being similar to a surfboard fin sticking out the bottom of the boat…while a rudder is rear mounted and can be dropped or retracted as conditions warrant the need.
