Congrats to Jeff, Brian and Ernie for finishing their respective races at the Uwharrie Trail Run in early February. This trail run is known for the toll it takes on the runners given the often cold temps, muddy trails and early season timing. Jeff tackled the 20 miler with time of 3HRs 48MIN, Brian took a very well run 23rd in the 40 miler with a 7HR 44MIN effort, while Ernie though struggling through the 40 miler still pushed a sub 10HR effort with a 9HR 57 MIN final time. Good work Gentlemen……
More racing results will be posted as Bruce tackles the Swamp Fox Adventure Race, while Brian and Jeff team up to tackle the Check-Point Zero AR on the weekend of March 8th. Stay posted for results and write-ups.

Well, judging from the racer feedback the ORATT was a success with 21 riders toeing the starting line and 18 official finishers, as with any enduro ride mechanicals plagued the field with a counted 5 flat tires by the end of the day. We’ll look to have it back in 2008 with hopefully a much larger turnout. The weather was great and some really strong riders showed to tackle the 40 mile course.
Aaron Hoog 4:14 1st SOLO- assisted Nolan with flat tire.

Well, what can we say the toughest offering yet of this classic…Bruce and Jeff took it on the chin with 73.8 miles of riding over 11HRS10MIN in the saddle…..classic rocky singletrack climbs….barbwire fence crossing bushwhacks…cramped feet and hands downhills….missed the damn connector trails navigation and very nice West Virginia born and bred BEERS before and after. The director threw it all at the racers this year with some serious long legs between checkpoints…as one rider from Asheville NC commented…”I’m fron Asheville NC, and it doesn’t compare” though I don’t necessarily agree, especially after the PMBAR…it was tough and we were definately glad we took it on! 4th Place DUO team at the end of the day, no major injuries or mechanicals, we’ll gladly take it…………………
Congrats to Ernie Chilcott and Charlie Roberts for their 5th place overall and 1st place Duo finish in the July 21st OAR 24HR AR! The Duo completed the event in 19HRs 04MIN over very tough course in the Roanoke Va. area. For complete results see OAR24
Closing In.., Torc XC Photo, On the Chase, Start area,
If there’s one lesson to be learned from this posting is that you don’t run a 5K prior to racing in an 18 mile XC singlespeed bike race in 90 degree heat. Though admittedly a slow learner, Bruce competed in the Susan Komen 5K posting a time of 22:16 and then headed out to race in the TORC festival Mtb race at Lake Crabtree. Though holding on to third place for the majority of the race, calf muscle cramps set in during the final couple miles of the third lap dropping Bruce to fourth in the singlespeed category with at time of 1:43 minutes.

Congrats to Ernie and Charlie for their great performance at the Burn 24 Hour MTB race in Wilkesboro NC on May 26-27th. The two paired up to race in the very competitive open duo category and came up with a third place finish with 33 laps. Both of them reported having a strong but trying race with the usual symptoms of pushing the limits. Check out the burn link for complete race result: Burn24

Overall the day was quite challenging given the heavy rain fall the prior night and intermittent rain throughout the race day. Between the advanced technical nature of the trails and the mud created by the rain, a good portion of the race was spent pushing the bikes uphill and walking them down. In between the riding was also hit and miss with still alot of blown down trees from the heavy winds that came through about two weeks ago.
A lot of teams were plagued by mechanicals such as disabled brakes, shifting problems, broken dérailleur’s etc. The trail conditions contributed significantly to the problems as there were simply no spots for relief from the mud and water. Ten hours or more on a bike is a long and difficult day in good conditions and a testament to teams that pushed through to even finish.
Team member Bruce Dale competed in the 4 Hour Garner EMS MTB race Saturday finishing 3rd among the Single speed racers and fourth among all SOLO male racers with 8 laps. Surprisingly among the 30 SOLO male racers the 2nd, 3rd and 4th places were all single speed riders! Check out the race reports for more details!
